Chapter 4

1 And the word1697 of Samuel8050 came1961 to all3605 Israel.3478 Now Israel3478 went3318 out against7125 the Philistines6430 to battle,4421 and pitched2583 beside5921 Ebenezer:72 and the Philistines6430 pitched2583 in Aphek.663

2 And the Philistines6430 put themselves in array6186 against7125 Israel:3478 and when they joined5203 battle,4421 Israel3478 was smitten5062 before6440 the Philistines:6430 and they slew5221 of the army4634 in the field7704 about four702 thousand505 men.376

3 And when the people5971 were come935 into413 the camp,4264 the elders2205 of Israel3478 said,559 Why4100 has the LORD3068 smitten5062 us to day3117 before6440 the Philistines?6430 Let us fetch3947 the ark727 of the covenant1285 of the LORD3068 out of Shiloh7887 to us, that, when it comes935 among7130 us, it may save3467 us out of the hand3709 of our enemies.341

4 So the people5971 sent7971 to Shiloh,7887 that they might bring5375 from there8033 the ark727 of the covenant1285 of the LORD3068 of hosts,6635 which dwells3427 between the cherubim:3742 and the two8147 sons1121 of Eli,5941 Hophni2652 and Phinehas,6372 were there8033 with the ark727 of the covenant1285 of God.430

5 And when the ark727 of the covenant1285 of the LORD3068 came935 into413 the camp,4264 all3605 Israel3478 shouted7321 with a great1419 shout,8643 so that the earth776 rang1949 again.

6 And when the Philistines6430 heard8085 the noise6963 of the shout,8643 they said,559 What4100 means the noise6963 of this2063 great1419 shout8643 in the camp4264 of the Hebrews?5680 And they understood3045 that the ark727 of the LORD3068 was come935 into413 the camp.4264

7 And the Philistines6430 were afraid,3372 for they said,559 God430 is come935 into413 the camp.4264 And they said,559 Woe188 to us! for there has not been1961 such2063 a thing heretofore.865

8 Woe188 to us! who4310 shall deliver5337 us out of the hand3027 of these428 mighty117 Gods?430 these428 are the Gods430 that smote5221 the Egyptians4714 with all3605 the plagues4347 in the wilderness.4057

9 Be strong 2388and quit1961 yourselves like men,582 O you Philistines,6430 that you be not servants5647 to the Hebrews,5680 as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men,582 and fight.3898

10 And the Philistines6430 fought,3898 and Israel3478 was smitten,5062 and they fled5127 every man376 into his tent:168 and there was a very3966 great1419 slaughter;4347 for there fell5307 of Israel3478 thirty7970 thousand505 footmen.7273

11 And the ark727 of God430 was taken;3947 and the two8147 sons1121 of Eli,5941 Hophni2652 and Phinehas,6372 were slain.4191

12 And there ran7323 a man376 of Benjamin1144 out of the army,4634 and came935 to Shiloh7887 the same1931 day3117 with his clothes4055 rent,7167 and with earth127 on his head.7218

13 And when he came,935 see,2009 Eli5941 sat3427 on a seat3678 by the wayside3197 1870 watching:6822 for his heart3820 trembled2730 for the ark727 of God.430 And when the man376 came935 into the city,5892 and told5046 it, all3605 the city5892 cried2199 out.

14 And when Eli5941 heard8085 the noise6963 of the crying,6818 he said,559 What4100 means the noise6963 of this2088 tumult?1995 And the man376 came935 in hastily,4116 and told5046 Eli.5941

15 Now Eli5941 was ninety8673 and eight8083 years8141 old;1121 and his eyes5869 were dim,6965 that he could3201 not see.7200

16 And the man376 said559 to Eli,5941 I am he that came935 out of the army,4634 and I fled5127 to day3117 out of the army.4634 And he said,559 What4100 is there done,1697 my son?1121

17 And the messenger1319 answered6030 and said,559 Israel3478 is fled5127 before6440 the Philistines,6430 and there has been1961 also1571 a great1419 slaughter4046 among the people,5971 and your two8147 sons1121 also,1571 Hophni2652 and Phinehas,6372 are dead,4191 and the ark727 of God430 is taken.3947

18 And it came1961 to pass, when he made mention2142 of the ark727 of God,430 that he fell5307 from off5921 the seat3678 backward322 by the side3027 of the gate,8179 and his neck4665 broke,7665 and he died:4191 for he was an old2204 man,376 and heavy.3513 And he had judged8199 Israel3478 forty705 years.8141

19 And his daughter3618 in law,3618 Phinehas'6372 wife,802 was with child,2030 near to be delivered:3205 and when she heard8085 the tidings8052 that the ark727 of God430 was taken,3947 and that her father2524 in law2524 and her husband376 were dead,4191 she bowed3766 herself and travailed;3205 for her pains6735 came2015 on her.

20 And about the time6256 of her death4191 the women that stood5324 by her said1696 to her, Fear3372 not; for you have born3205 a son.1121 But she answered6030 not, neither3808 did she regard3820 it.

21 And she named7121 the child5288 Ichabod,350 saying,559 The glory3519 is departed1540 from Israel:3478 because413 the ark727 of God430 was taken,3947 and because413 of her father2524 in law2524 and her husband.376

22 And she said,559 The glory3519 is departed1540 from Israel:3478 for the ark727 of God430 is taken.3947

4 Они отправили людей в Силом, и те принесли ковчег Соглашения Господа Всемогущего. На крышке ковчега были Херувимы, подобные трону, на которых сидел Господь. Вместе с ковчегом пришли два сына Илия, Офни и Финеес.

5 Когда ковчег Соглашения Господа прибыл в лагерь, израильтяне подняли такой сильный крик, что от него задрожала земля.

6 Филистимляне услышали этот крик и спросили: «Отчего так громко кричат в иудейском лагере?» И узнали они, что в лагерь израильтян принесли ковчег Соглашения Господа.

7 Филистимляне испугались и закричали: «Боги пришли к ним в лагерь! Горе нам! Такого не бывало никогда раньше!

8 Горе нам! Кто спасёт нас от этих сильных богов? Это те боги, которые поразили египтян страшными болезнями.

9 Смелее, филистимляне! Сражайтесь и будьте мужественны! В прошлом иудеи были нашими рабами, так сражайтесь же мужественно, чтобы не быть нам у них в порабощении!»

10 Филистимляне вышли на битву и победили израильтян, и все израильские воины разбежались по своим домам. Потерпев великое поражение, израильтяне потеряли тридцать тысяч человек.

11 Филистимляне захватили ковчег Соглашения Божьего и убили двух сыновей Илия, Офни и Финееса.

12 В тот день один вениамитянин бежал с места сражения в Силом. Он разорвал на себе одежду и посыпал голову пылью в знак великой печали.

13 Илий очень беспокоился о ковчеге Соглашения, и поэтому он находился на своём почётном месте у городских ворот, с нетерпением ожидая известий с поля боя. Когда этот воин пришёл в Силом и рассказал о том, что случилось, весь народ громко зарыдал.

14 Илию было девяносто восемь лет. Он был слеп и не видел, что происходит. Услышав громкие вопли, он спросил: «Отчего такой шум?» Тогда вениамитянин подбежал к Илию и рассказал ему, что случилось.

16 Он сказал Илию: «Я только что пришёл с места сражения!» Илий спросил: «Что произошло, сын мой?»

17 Вениамитянин ответил: «Израиль бежал от филистимлян. Израильская армия потеряла много воинов. Оба сына твои убиты, и ковчег Соглашения Божьего захвачен».

18 Когда он упомянул о ковчеге Соглашения Божьего, Илий упал назад со скамьи, сломал себе шею и умер, так как он был стар и тяжёл. Илий был судьей Израиля двадцать лет.

19 Невестка Илия, жена Финееса, была беременна и должна была уже рожать. Когда она услышала о захвате врагами ковчега Соглашения Божьего, о смерти свёкра и своего мужа Финееса, то почувствовала боли, и у неё начались роды.

20 Когда она была при смерти, женщины, помогавшие ей, говорили: «Не беспокойся! Ты родила сына». Но она не отвечала и не обращала внимания.

21 Она назвала ребёнка Ихавод. Она сделала это, чтобы сказать:

6 Филистимляне услышали этот крик и спросили: «Отчего так громко кричат в иудейском лагере?» И узнали они, что в лагерь израильтян принесли ковчег Соглашения Господа.

7 Филистимляне испугались и закричали: «Боги пришли к ним в лагерь! Горе нам! Такого не бывало никогда раньше!

10 Филистимляне вышли на битву и победили израильтян, и все израильские воины разбежались по своим домам. Потерпев великое поражение, израильтяне потеряли тридцать тысяч человек.
